About Our Captain - Chad Harris

I was born in Rochester, NY, where I spent my summers driving boats and soaking up life on the bays and lakes of upstate New York. One day, a childhood friend who lived in Key West asked if I wanted to ride down to the Keys with him—he needed help transporting a motorcycle and a few other things, and he offered to buy my flight back. It sounded like an adventure, so over a few drinks we booked the trip and my return ticket to Rochester.

We made the drive, had an incredible couple of days in paradise, and then it was time for me to head home… or so I thought.

At the airport, the airline couldn’t find my ticket. Line after line, counter after counter—nothing. The only available seat that day was a one-way ticket for $1,400, and all I could think about was laying down to recover from a wild few days. Instead, I called my buddy and told him, “Looks like I’m staying a little longer.”

That unexpected delay changed my whole life.

I grabbed a bike and started exploring the island. I passed a jet ski and boat rental shop and thought, “That looks like the perfect job.” Just for fun, I applied. The next morning at 8 a.m., the owner called and told me to come in. Suddenly I was running jet ski tours, boat rentals, and charters—right there in the Florida Keys.

What started as an accident became a career. I spent 12 years on the water, earned my 100 Ton Masters Captain’s License, and eventually upgraded to my 200 Ton Masters License. I always knew I belonged on the water, and helping people create unforgettable memories felt like my purpose.

Today, I’m the proud owner and operator of Salty Bottom Boats, a party boat charter in Key West, Florida with two boats. Some people call this a job— I call it living.

My goal is simple: to give every visitor and local the chance to experience the water the way I fell in love with it—through adventure, freedom, and unforgettable moments.
